Methamphetamine (P) Testing

Methamphetamine (Meth or P) use is a major problem in New Zealand. Major drug busts, such as the recent Operation Trojan Shield highlight how prevalent it is. Water testing for meth in 2019 showed traces in New Zealand water was scarily high!

So how does this affect you? If traces of meth are found in your home or rental, besides the associated health concerns, the home may require decontamination - a process governed by law. This can be extremely costly, and insurance may refuse to pay if you cannot prove exactly when the contamination occurred.

Meth (P) testing at your property before and after every tenant provides documented and dated evidence that can be used to support insurance claims - and give you peace of mind that your property or rental is not being wrecked by meth.

Houses with meth use or manufacture are contaminated with dangerous toxins and chemicals that attach themselves to surfaces in the home. When people or pets rub against these contaminated surfaces the meth residue enters through their skin and contact from hands to mouth and nose. Babies who crawl on contaminated carpets and furniture are most vulnerable.

About Methamphetamine Screening (meth testing) in New Zealand

Meth screen testing is easy, safe and no property damage is caused

Tests have a quick turnaround time from an AINZ approved laboratory

Tests meet NZS8510:2007 - Testing and decontamination of methamphetamine standards

Our meth testing checks for the presence of methamphetamine residues on surfaces for levels above those deemed acceptable by law – 1.5ug/100cm2 or above.

Note that there are limitations to meth testing including:

  • If the surface has been cleaned or replaced i.e. by repainting, wallpapering or relaying of carpet, there may be no residue to provide a positive reading.

  • The meth test is based on finding residue on the surface from a random sample.  The random sample results may not be representative of the presence or absence of methamphetamine in any part of the building where testing was not undertaken. The test can only return results about the area tested and does not eliminate the possibility that methamphetamine may be present in other areas.

Types of Meth (P) tests

A meth test takes a 10cm x 10cm swab of a wall or surface. Each sample is known as a discrete sample.

Individual Laboratory Testing

Discrete samples are sent to a lab to be tested individually for levels of meth.

Laboratory Composite Testing

Discrete sample s are combined to make a composite sample i.e. for a room or area. This set of samples is then tested together
